It is best to fly into Dublin Airport, which is very well served by a number of international airlines.

🚌 Direct Bus from Dublin Airport to Athlone

You can travel to Athlone by bus directly from Dublin Airport (approx. 2 hr 25 mins.) on Citylink (citylink.ie). The stop is located in Zone 10 within the airport precinct. The Citylink bus stops at the university (which can be especially convenient for your return journey). The Citylink bus also stops at the B&Q Store (10 minutes walk to the town centre).

All bus journeys between Dublin Airport and Athlone cost approximately €26 return, and you need to purchase in advance. You can purchase tickets at the airport, but there is a chance the buses can be fully booked, so we strongly advise that you reserve in advance.

🚆Train from Dublin to Athlone

There is a train service from Dublin to Athlone, but you would need to take a bus or taxi to the train station in the city centre from Dublin Airport. The name of the train station is Heuston Station. Please check timetables for the Dublin to Athlone route: www.irishrail.ie

When considering accommodation options, we recommend that you choose accommodation in the Athlone town centre as opposed to near the university, to allow you avail of the various restaurants, pubs, shops and other amenities that the centre has to offer during your visit to Athlone.

For accommodation, we recommend one of the three hotels listed below (but note that the third is further away). Early reservation is advised. The first two are centrally located, so are ideally situated. These might be your best options when considering accommodation.

There are other Hotels in Athlone, such as the Hodson Bay Hotel and Athlone Springs Hotel, but these are located out of town.
