Centuries of Irish history are being brought to life once more.
At Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), we are proud to lead the Banagher Stone Restoration Project, an initiative that blends heritage preservation, digital innovation, and education.
The Banagher Stone, an early Christian cross linked to the Clonmacnoise workshop tradition, stands as a remarkable example of Ireland’s artistic and cultural legacy. Through 3D scanning, digital reconstruction, and advanced fabrication technologies, our team is working to restore this historic monument to its former glory, right here on our TUS campus.
This work is part of the EU-SIDE (European Social Innovation and Democratic Education) initiative, which champions collaboration, creativity, and community in education and beyond.
By merging the past and the future, we aim not only to preserve an ancient artefact but also to inspire new ways of learning and innovating together.
✨ Follow our journey as we connect heritage, technology, and community at TUS.

At the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), we are exploring a new initiative focused on improving access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for students and apprentices who may face financial barriers when starting their practical training.
The initiative aims to provide a flexible PPE access scheme, allowing essential protective clothing, such as protective jackets and trousers, to be made available through a rental or low-cost contribution model. This approach helps reduce the upfront costs often associated with entering technical or trade-based education.
Importantly, all PPE involved in the initiative would be new, certified safety gear, with any contributions made by students reinvested into local socially innovative initiatives, helping to support wider community impact and future student supports.
This project reflects the spirit of innovation, accessibility, and social responsibility that underpins initiatives such as EU-SIDE (European Social Innovation and Democratic Education), demonstrating how practical solutions can help remove barriers while strengthening both education and community.
By ensuring that safety, opportunity, and innovation go hand in hand, we hope to support the next generation of skilled learners while fostering a culture of shared responsibility and social impact.
✨ Together, we can build safer pathways into education, training, and community innovation.
